Portland, Oregon - August 13, 2008 - HeartWorks Publishing, a Portland-based publisher of books for grieving parents, announced today that its first publication, Heart Works: A Father's Grief, authored by Portland resident, Jerre Petersen, has won First Runner-up in the prestigious 2008 Eric Hoffer Award reviews for Short Prose. Heart Works: A Father's Grief has won previous acclaim for prose, photography and publishing excellence, including the Benjamin Franklin Award from the Publishers Marketing Association.

Grieving the death of a child or other loved one takes a heavy emotional toll on parents and family, often leaving them with deep and long-lasting feelings of pain and hopelessness. Jerre Petersen experienced this grief personally when his 9-year old daughter, Audrey, succumbed to brain cancer. Her life inspired the writing of the book with the hope that his thoughtful introspection, gentle words and breathtaking photography would help other parents through their pain and give them solace.

According to Jerre Petersen, a small business owner of Negative Perfection in Northeast Portland, "My book, Heart Works, speaks to my undying love for my daughter and the many ways her death changed me. Writing the words, traveling around Oregon to photograph its natural beauty and spending many introspective moments seeking my own answers to life and death, inspired me to write a book that I hope embraces parents who have experienced the loss of a loved one, soothing their pain and giving them hope for the future".

Heart Works: A Father's Grief has been recognized in numerous articles and news stories regarding awards and organizations that use the book in grief counseling and as a gift for grieving families. Heart Works has been generously donated to organizations across the U.S. and around the world that are helping those who have experienced the loss of a loved one and the heart numbing grief that follows.

"I find it heart-wrenchingly ironic that your profound loss has been turned into an affirming and utterly necessary book for a family who hasn't experienced your loss to possess." -Jason Foulk, Father
